Hygge (pronounced Hoo-Ga) is a Norwegian and Danish word and concept which has become increasingly popular throughout the UK in recent years. In fact, in 2016, the Collins English Dictionary named Hygge its runner-up word of the year.
Although the word itself can’t be directly translated into English; the closest alternatives are words such as cosy, joy.
It is said that the origins of Hygge lie in the long periods of darkness which Norway and Denmark experience and the desire to bring joy into what would ordinarily, be the insignificant moments in life. And, with the increasingly fast-paced world which we live in, it’s easy to see why cultures outside of Denmark are now looking to embrace these principles.
