Dark wood gives an aged feel so why not give it a new lease of life.
Firstly clean the fireplace thoroughly before you start with water and a cloth, continuing to clean until the cloth comes away clean. Allow time for the surface to dry.
Protect the surrounding area with dust sheets and masking tape.
To lighten dark wood mantels apply wood stripping paste, this will take the dark colour away from the wood.
Applying the wood stripping paste:
Once you have stripped the wood you can sand it with fine sandpaper to remove any residue of the stripper or dark patches.
Then apply three coats of chalk paint in your chosen colour and coat with a sealant. Wait at least an hour between coats to make sure the paint has enough time to dry.
Adding the heat proof spray paint:
To paint the fire grate itself you will need a heat resistant spray paint, coat with paint until you have the desired finish.
Avoid using your fireplace at for at least 24 hours in order for the paint fumes and the colour to dry fully.
