Are you new to Yorkshire or do you just need some ideas on where to get out in nature this summer? Reservoir walks are some of the most scenic around, beloved by Birdwatchers, Horse Riders, Dog walkers, photographers and countryside enthusiasts. We promise you won’t be disappointed by these scenic walks around our local reservoirs here in Yorkshire.

Eccup Reservoir

Eccup Reservoir is the perfect location for a waterside stroll. The 5-mile walk starts on Alwoodley Lane and follows the Dales link Way across Sandmoor Golf Course into the quiet pleasant countryside. The walk will take around 2 hours to complete, depending on how many times you let yourself get distracted by the magnificent Red Kite birds than can often be spotted flying above Eccup. This route is also linked to Harewood House and the Meanwood Valley Trail.

Fewston Reservoir

If you fancy a relatively gentle stroll, head to Fewston Reservoir in the Washburn Valley. Fewtson welcomes walkers, runners, cyclist and horse riders alike. The 4-mile trail will take you around 2 hours to complete with a mostly wide and well-surfaced route. There are separate tracks for walkers and runners, and bridleways for cyclists and horse riders. Why not make a day of it; the family-friendly site has picnic areas, free parking and toilets on-site!

Swinsty Reservoir

Whilst we’re in the Fewston Area, take a detour to Swinsty reservoir, just a stone’s throw away. The circular trip around Swinsty offers access for disabled visitors alongside bridleways for horse riders for all to enjoy the stunning scenery it has to offer. On the banks of the reservoir, Swinsty Hall was built in the 17th century and is currently owned by England Manager and summer 2018 hero Gareth Southgate. Fewston and Swinsty share facilities in terms of car parking, whilst picnic spots can be found in various locations around the reservoir, perfect for a family day out.

Scammonden Reservoir

This reservoir may be close to the motorway but don’t let that fool you it’s still the perfect place for some peace and quiet. The walk begins with a slightly steep slope, which soon leads into mostly level and surfaced paths for the remainder of the 3-mile walk, with no stiles and optional steps to contend with. If you’re feeling fit, you may want to walk up to the Deanhead Reservoir, it is steep but hugely rewarding when you are greeted with spectacular panoramic views.

To walk around the reservoir is approximately 4.5 miles with plenty of wildlife, sailing boats and photo opportunities on the way round, you’ll almost be wishing it was longer.
