Interior Design Rules
Measure your space
The tape measure is your best friend when it comes to decorating. If you have just moved in bring your floorplans furniture shopping. If you're redecorating draw the outline of your room including windows and doors, then get out your tape measure and make sure you have an accurate measurement of the walls. Don’t forget to measure the curtains and the distance from the poles to the floor, the blinds and anything else you need to work around. There’s no such thing as too much measuring. When you hit Ikea you will not be sorry you brought your little diagram with you. Remember you are going to need space between furniture as well.
Don’t forget about function
If you get carried away buying things because they look nice you ultimately still won’t get the look you want. If you buy a cupboard that’s too small but looks nicer than the larger one your space isn’t going to be tidy and clutter free is it. Trust me you’ll be glad you bought for functionality.
Don’t go overboard on the theme
A theme should be subtle and gently introduce itself. You want any guest to recognise it but with minimal effort. Create a room that you can adapt to each season.
Clear out the clutter
If you're moving home, cut the clutter before you move it to your new home. If your redecorating, get organised and send unwanted things to the charity shop. You do need to be quite harsh when decluttering, ask yourself these three questions…
1. When did I last use this?
2. Do I like this?
3. Is this useful?
If it’s a no or hasn't been used, then you don’t need it. Embrace the purge and your space will transform.
I hope this has helped and good luck with all your interior decorating!
