Fancy a trip to the seaside without the travel? Head to Guiseley this weekend for their annual Summer Street Party, you don’t even need to step foot on a plane.
The annual event has been a hit year on year, drawing in local crowds with a magnitude of stalls showcasing crafts, jewellery and much more.
It wouldn’t be a street party without music; they’ll be a host of bands performing, to add a soundtrack to a great day out.
To find out a little more we contacted the event organisers for some inside information on what you can expect from the weekend and what it means to the community. Here’s what they had to say!
‘The annual event was first started to mark The Queen’s 90th birthday and saw thousands attend and enjoy the festivities. Since then the group have used the money raised to improve and expand the Christmas Lights displays in the town and now hold two events a year - the summer street party and the Christmas Lights switch on.
The historic area of Towngate is the focus of the event and the street is closed off to traffic and instead filled with an array of stalls supporting local charities and organisations as well as local crafts and produce. The main stage provides entertainment throughout the day with a range of local artists whilst a fun fair provides all that thrill seekers need.
Each year there is a theme and this year is all about the seaside. Already the group have erected a giant deck chair and comedy seaside photo boards for locals to enjoy. On the day there will be fish and chips, candy floss, donkey rides and ice cream meaning that a trip to the coast won’t be necessary.
Stuart Andrew MP said “it’s just amazing how much this event has grown from an initial simple idea to something that’s drawing thousands of people. It great to see the whole town buzz on the day and we are so grateful to everyone for their support. I always remember attending street parties as part of nigh Royal events and the Queen’s 90th provides us with an opportunity to recreate such a tradition. I don’t think any of us believes we would now be making the final preparations for our seventh event. It’s wonderful.”
If you’re looking for a fun-filled day out this weekend Guiseley is the place for you. With a funfair for the thrill seekers, stalls for the shoppers and much more, there is definitely something for everyone! The festivities kick off at 2pm and finish at 6pm at Towngate, see you there!
