Kelly Pledges ‘Right To Own’
27th February 2007
Communities secretary Ruth Kelly has outlined moves to increase the number of social housing tenants who can buy a share of their homes. Kelly used a keynote speech at the Fabian Society last week to outline government proposals to allow social housing tenants to buy stakes as small as 10% in their own homes.
Under the Government’s recently introduced Social Homebuy scheme, 25% is the minimum stake allowed, but Notting Hill Housing Group is allowing shares of 10% upwards in its new build shared ownership properties.
The minister was speaking in the run up to next week’s publication of a government sponsored review by London School of Economics’ Professor John Hills of the UK’s social housing system.
