Miller Homes Take Full Responsibility
8th February 2007
Miller Homes has pledged to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2012, with a 20% reduction anticipated by the end of the decade.
The housebuilder's promise is one of many outlined in its Corporate and Social Responsibility Strategy.
The 18 page report has been designed to clearly set out Miller Homes' key CSR targets as well as providing an immediate action plan to ensure goals can be met within specified time frames.
The targets cover customer and employee relations, the environment and the community. Very specific goals are included - establishing what it would take to become carbon neutral and setting appropriate targets by the end of the year, ensuring all timber comes from sustainable sources by 2008 and immediately minimising the volume of construction waste sent to landfill.
Amongst other goals, the company has also pledged to do more to promote healthy living amongst its workforce, work harder at developing good community relations and encouraging customers to live a more sustainable lifestyle.
Numerous key stakeholders including Friends of the Earth, the WWF and the Department of Trade and Industry were consulted in the document's development process with opinions sought on a range of issues including the efficient use of land and other resources, the environmental impact of a home throughout its lifecycle and responding to climate change.
The final document has now been made available to customers, employees, government bodies, planners, land owners and all other stakeholders.
Marketing Director, Philip Hogg, said; "In developing this strategy we haven't gone for quick wins. We have taken the long view and set ourselves attainable and realistic targets."
Each of the company's business functions has now been charged with addressing the issues raised in the CSR strategy.
The sales teams have been briefed to investigate the corporate responsibility features that customers would wish to see in their homes whilst the technical departments are looking at ways to reduce the use of natural resources and cut emissions.
Production staff are currently addressing construction waste issues whilst the finance teams are looking at a range of environmental performance issues spanning energy sourcing, consumption and efficiency, carbon neutrality and business travel.
Philip Hogg added; "Our overall mission is to deliver world class levels of service to our customers, outstanding levels of performance for our shareholders and ultimately be the sector's best employer, partner and innovator."
"This document gives us a clear strategy for meeting these goals. We know that we can't deliver everything overnight but we are already moving in the right direction. Because the whole company is involved in the process, CSR has become a major part of our company culture and this will help us to deliver our targets on time."
