Minister Eyes Low-Energy Home Support

23rd April 2007

Housing Minister Yvette Cooper has announced a grant scheme designed to help people improve the energy efficiency of their homes, in line with the new energy performance ratings. Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs), which are part of the incoming Home Information Packs (HIPs), rate homes from A – G in a similar way to the existing EU Energy Label for household appliances.

Speaking on the HIPs issue, Yvette Cooper revealed that she will be hosting a major meeting of energy suppliers, councils and the Energy Savings Trust (EST) to clarify ways in which help can be offered to homebuyers looking to boost their energy efficiency.

“We want homebuyers with poorly rated homes to be able to get extra support,” commented the Housing Minister. “From 1st June we want homebuyers to have easy access to help so they can make changes recommended in their EPC. Average homebuyers purchasing E, F or G rated homes should be able to qualify for £100 - £300 support to help with better insulating their homes. Depending on their personal circumstances or the nature of the improvements needed, they may be able to get even more help.”
