Trinity Walk Property Development Moves a Step Closer in Wakefield

21st December 2007

The Trinity Walk property development, which is set to transform the Marsh Way area of Wakefield city centre, will move a step closer in January when the old Marsh Way multi-storey car park closes

The car park - which has been kept open during the festive period to help shoppers - will close on Sunday 6th January 2008 but there are temporary car parks in place to help reduce parking problems.

Cllr Denise Jeffery, Wakefield Council's Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Regeneration, said:

"Trinity Walk is one of the city's major regeneration projects. It is a multi-million pound investment that will add to the many visitor attractions that we already have. The car park is being demolished to make way for the major retail outlets that will transform shopping in Wakefield."

Shepherd Construction is the main contractor on the scheme, and has been on site since September of this year. Completion of the project is scheduled for mid-2010.

Speaking on behalf of Shepherd Construction, Divisional Construction Director, Colin Sargeant, said:

"The Trinity Walk development is set to transform the centre of Wakefield, and the closing of the Marsh Way car park is a major step in the progression of the project. We have worked closely with Wakefield Council to ensure that the least amount of people possible are affected by the closure."

Temporary long stay car parks have already been created to minimise disruption. Lower Warrengate car park on Sun Lane has space for around 150 cars and Trinity Walk car park, on the old market site has space for a further 120 cars. Both these car parks allow off street parking for a maximum of 10 hours and the charges are the same as other Council operated car parks in Wakefield.

Cllr Jeffery added:

"Once the regeneration projects are complete there should be up to 2,000 extra car parking spaces in the city. At the same time we are aware of the impact vehicles have on the environment and congestion in the city centre. Our Travel Plan helps us and other organisations look at ways to reduce the need for car travel to and at work, such as using public transport, car sharing schemes, the Car Club and Freecitybus."
