first Friday 7th September
30th August 2007
first Friday, Wakefield’s key monthly business networking event, will welcome Paul Fullerton, Agent for the Bank of England in Yorkshire and the Humber, on 7th September 2007 at the Cedar Court Hotel, Wakefield, between 12 noon and 2pm
Gordon Brown's decision to free the Bank of England from political control in 1997 was possibly the single most influential on business in the last twenty years, as low inflation and sustained economic growth followed.
Yet recent turmoil in world stock markets as a result of the crisis in the US mortgage market have demonstrated the vulnerability of national economics to global factors, leaving many to wonder whether the UK’s golden age of macro economic stability may be in jeopardy.
Paul's primary role is Economist for Mervyn King, Governor of the Bank of England, and The Monetary Policy Committee, who set interest rates for the United Kingdom. Paul is the Bank's senior representative in the region for banking and public relations, and advises on the state of the UK economy from a Yorkshire and the Humber perspective.
Prior to working at the Bank, Paul worked in a range of senior management positions in commercial banking, notably the National Australia Bank and Yorkshire Bank Groups where he was Head of Marketing and Head of Retail Banking respectively.
He has also acted as a consultant for Irish telecoms group Eirecom plc, and helped create an international golf supply chain, based in South Africa and the United States.
He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (CIB), and is a past Chief Examiner in Marketing and Financial Services for the MBA course run by the CIB. Paul is also a member of the Advisory Board of Leeds University.
Paul now happily sees Yorkshire as his adopted home after living and working in the county for the last 36 years, but for purgatory, retains his season ticket at Newcastle United Football Club.
Paul Barrett, first’s Head of Marketing and Investment said:
“We’re delighted to welcome Paul to first Friday. Paul has a key role in helping to achieve government target for the annual inflation rate. This is a subject that has a direct influence on all businesses, from sole trader or multi-nationals, I’m certain Paul will provide a fascinating insight into the challenges of achieving low inflation and sustained economic growth.”
