Coal Mining Museum is the Best Attraction in Yorkshire

The National Coal Mining Museum for England, in Wakefield has scooped the prestigious White Rose Award for Tourism Attraction of the Year (50,000 visitors and over)
The White Rose Awards are regarded as the ‘Oscars’ of the tourism industry and having scooped the Attraction of the Year Award (50,000 visitors and over) the Museum hopes to represent the region in the national Enjoy England awards.
The National Coal Mining Museum near Wakefield fought off competition from Harewood House, Magna, the National Media Museum and York Castle to take home the coveted prize, presented by Christa Ackroyd and Harry Gratian. This is not the first time the Museum has been recognised at the White Rose Awards. In 2003 the Museum won the ‘Tourism for All’ award and was also a finalist in the Best Tourism Experience of the Year category this year.

The Museum offers a truly unique tourism experience in the heart of Yorkshire; where former miners take visitors 140m underground and lead guided tours at the Museum’s Caphouse Colliery site.
The museum had also maintained the old colliery surface property and developed an extensive collection, providing a truly memorable look at the story of one of the most important industries in our countries social history. There is a café and shop with souvenirs for sale.
